We can only have a peaceful future if we learn from the past. Today, we interviewed an eyewitness of an historical moment: The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
It was Radijojo’s Founder Thomas Roehlinger, today one of the “Global Experts” on United Nations Alliance of Civilizations. Thomas was 19 years old, when he joined the civil society movement in East Germany that led to the fall of the Wall, and to the end of the Cold War in Europe.
What he told us was: Peace is possible, even if it looks like there are cultural and political differences that could be never overcome, like between Eastern and Western Germany, Eastern and Western Europe. But, he continued, people have to get active for change themselves, and it can take very very long, as the example of South Korea and North Korea shows. Most important: Only peaceful actions can break down walls and bring peace – violence leads only to more violence and maybe even higher walls….
Merci Thomas for this personal historical insight! This was our first expert interview ever; a great journalistic experience for us!
